Geoffrey Rush Could Return As Barbossa In Pirates Of The Caribbean 6

Geoffrey Rush could potentially return as Captain Hector Barbossa in Pirates of the Caribbean 6, but only if the story gives his character a meaningful reason to come back.

Interest in the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie has increased following producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s recent comments about Johnny Depp. Bruckheimer has confirmed that discussions are taking place with Depp about potentially reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, although the movie remains in development and Disney has not announced a release date.

Rush’s possible return is more complicated because Barbossa sacrificed himself at the end of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The character gave his life while protecting his daughter, Carina, during the final confrontation with Captain Salazar.

That ending was an important emotional moment for Barbossa, which is why bringing him back would require a story that does not diminish the significance of his sacrifice. Rush has previously suggested that he could consider returning if the character’s comeback made creative sense, including the possibility of appearing in a supernatural form.

Rush first appeared as Barbossa in 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The character began as one of the franchise’s primary villains before becoming an important ally to Jack Sparrow in later installments. Rush ultimately appeared in all five released Pirates of the Caribbean movies, making Barbossa one of the franchise’s most consistent characters.

However, the sixth movie could continue without some of the franchise’s original stars. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley were both absent from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides after playing major roles in the first three films, demonstrating that the franchise has previously moved forward with a different combination of returning and new characters.

Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is still being developed, with a screenplay in progress and discussions surrounding Depp’s potential return. Disney has not yet announced the final cast, production schedule, or release date.
