Michelle Yeoh’s The Surgeon Gets 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score As Critics Compare It To John Wick And The Pitt
Michelle Yeoh and Martin Freeman’s upcoming action thriller The Surgeon has made an impressive first appearance on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a 100% critics’ score following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
In The Surgeon, Yeoh stars as a retired surgeon whose quiet life is suddenly disrupted when she is held at gunpoint and forced to perform surgery on an injured member of a criminal gang. The film also features Martin Freeman, Laurie Davidson, Yuri Kolokolnikov and Joseph Mydell.
Following its TIFF premiere, the first wave of critical reactions has begun appearing online, giving The Surgeon a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Early reviews have described the movie as shocking, violent, witty and entertaining, with several critics highlighting its genre-blending approach and fast-paced thrills.
The film has also drawn comparisons to movies such as John Wick and the medical drama The Pitt. The connection to John Wick is particularly notable because Basil Iwanyk, one of the producers of The Surgeon, previously produced the Keanu Reeves-led action franchise.
Roshan Sethi serves as both director and screenwriter of The Surgeon, bringing genuine medical experience to the project. Sethi is a practicing surgeon who has previously brought his medical knowledge to television, working as a writer on Code Black and as a co-creator of The Resident.
The early response has also singled out Michelle Yeoh’s performance. Several critics have praised her work in the film, with reactions describing her performance as a major strength and suggesting that the movie gives Yeoh another standout action role.
Yeoh has built an extensive career across action, drama and major Hollywood franchises. Her notable credits include Tomorrow Never Dies, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha, Crazy Rich Asians, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Wicked and Wicked: For Good. She has also appeared in the Star Trek franchise.
Her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once earned Yeoh an Academy Award, Golden Globe and Actor Award for Best Actress. More recently, she and her Wicked co-stars received an Actor Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
Martin Freeman brings an equally diverse résumé to The Surgeon. The actor has appeared in films including Love Actually, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Hobbit trilogy and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. His television credits include The Office UK, Sherlock, Fargo and Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials.
Freeman is also familiar to Marvel fans for his role as Everett K. Ross in several Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. His appearances include Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Secret Invasion. In The Surgeon, Freeman takes on a very different role, playing a crime boss. Throughout his career, he has received recognition from the Emmys, SAG Awards and BAFTAs.
With Yeoh and Freeman appearing together for the first time, The Surgeon is already generating strong attention following its TIFF debut. The early critical response suggests that the film could offer a distinctive combination of action, medical drama and crime thriller elements.
However, audiences will have to wait for more information about its wider release. As of now, a theatrical release date for The Surgeon has not yet been announced.
