Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar Officially Returning To The Big Screen Next Year

Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is officially set to return to the big screen in a special live orchestral event in London.

Released in 2014 as Nolan’s follow-up to The Dark Knight Rises, the acclaimed science-fiction epic stars Matthew McConaughey as Cooper, an astronaut who leads a team on a dangerous mission to search for a new home for humanity. Although Interstellar is now more than a decade old, the film continues to maintain a strong following, and audiences will soon have another opportunity to experience it on the big screen.

According to an announcement from The O2, Interstellar Live with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is scheduled to take place at London’s O2 arena on Sunday, May 23, 2027. Tickets will go on general sale on Friday, September 11, at 10 a.m. BST, which is 5 a.m. ET. O2 and Virgin Media customers will have access to priority tickets beginning Wednesday, September 9.

The event is currently planned as two screenings on May 23, with one performance scheduled for the afternoon and another in the evening. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by Matt Dunkley, while organist Roger Sayer, who also performed on the original film soundtrack, is expected to take part.

The upcoming event also highlights the memorable collaboration between Nolan and composer Hans Zimmer. The pair worked together on six films, beginning with Batman Begins in 2005 and continuing through Dunkirk in 2017. Zimmer’s work on Interstellar is particularly well regarded and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score.

Despite receiving a 73% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Interstellar has remained an enduring part of Nolan’s filmography. Its combination of enormous visuals, distinctive sound design, emotional storytelling, and Zimmer’s celebrated score has helped make the movie a popular choice for special screenings and limited theatrical returns. Its most recent major theatrical release came in 2024 to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

Running for two hours and 49 minutes, Interstellar features an extensive supporting cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, John Lithgow, Mackenzie Foy, David Oyelowo, Timothée Chalamet, and Matt Damon. The film was produced with a reported budget of $165 million and ultimately earned approximately $774.7 million worldwide.

Live orchestra screenings have continued to attract audiences in recent years, with major franchises and films such as The Lord of the Rings, Jurassic Park, and Harry Potter receiving similar presentations in different parts of the world. If the 2027 Interstellar event performs well, another orchestral theatrical presentation could potentially follow in the future.

Nolan remains one of Hollywood’s most successful filmmakers, with his recent work including The Odyssey (2026), which features another collaboration with Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson. Whether Nolan and Zimmer will collaborate on another movie remains uncertain, but the continuing popularity of Interstellar demonstrates why another reunion between the filmmaker and composer could be welcomed by fans.
