HBO’s Harry Potter Series Casts James And Lily Potter, Adds Charlie Weasley

HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series has announced the actors who will portray Harry Potter’s parents, James and Lily Potter, along with the casting of Charlie Weasley, Ron’s older brother.

With the series’ December 25 premiere approaching, HBO has revealed most of its main cast. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Alastair Stout will portray Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton will take on the role of Hermione Granger. The cast also includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy. However, the casting of Harry’s parents had remained undisclosed until now.

HBO has confirmed that Jasper Talbot will play James Potter, while Hannah Chinn will portray Lily Potter in the first season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Additionally, Harry Gilby has joined the cast as Charlie Weasley, the older brother of Ron who works with dragons.

The three actors bring experience from several established productions. Talbot appeared in three episodes of the David Tennant-led series Broadchurch, while Chinn played a television news anchor in The Conjuring: Last Rites. Gilby appeared in the fifth season of Netflix’s The Last Kingdom and portrayed a young J.R.R. Tolkien in the 2019 biographical film Tolkien. Although they have already worked on recognizable projects, the Harry Potter series could become their most prominent roles to date, potentially offering opportunities to reprise their characters across multiple seasons.

The casting of Talbot and Chinn also aligns more closely with the ages of James and Lily as described in the original novels. This differs from the film adaptations, in which Adrian Rawlins and Geraldine Somerville portrayed Harry’s parents as adults.

Although James, Lily, and Charlie have limited appearances in the early Harry Potter books, the television format could allow the adaptation to explore their roles in greater detail. This may include additional flashbacks featuring Harry’s parents and expanded appearances by Charlie in the first season and beyond.

The series has already been renewed for a second season, with production underway. Additional cast members announced for the upcoming season include Kit Harington as Gilderoy Lockhart, Bonnie Hill as Ginny Weasley, Lenny Rush as Dobby, Billy Barratt as Tom Riddle, Molly Hewitt-Richards as Moaning Myrtle, and Jasper Ambrose as Colin Creevey.

In the first novel, Harry encounters images of his parents through the Mirror of Erised and a photo album given to him by Hagrid. The television adaptation is expected to have opportunities to depict these moments, potentially alongside flashbacks that provide further insight into James and Lily’s lives.

Charlie Weasley, meanwhile, does not physically appear in the first book. Instead, he arranges for his friends to collect Norbert, Hagrid’s baby dragon, from Hogwarts and transport the creature to a sanctuary in Romania. Casting Charlie for the first season could indicate a change to the original storyline, potentially allowing him to appear in person to help Ron and his friends deal with Norbert.

Charlie’s inclusion also distinguishes the HBO adaptation from the films, where the character never appears in person. His only brief connection to the movie series comes through a photograph of the Weasley family during their holiday in Egypt in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In that uncredited appearance, Charlie was portrayed by Alex Crockford.

As the series progresses, James and Lily may need to be portrayed by younger actors in scenes involving memories shown through the Pensieve. This would follow the approach used in the films, where different versions of the characters were depicted depending on the timeline of the story.
