The Mandalorian Returns With New Behind-The-Scenes Book In November
The Mandalorian is returning next week with a new release, giving Star Wars fans another opportunity to explore the franchise’s latest adventure.
The Mandalorian’s Journey From Disney+ to Theaters
The first live-action series in the Star Wars franchise takes place five years after Return of the Jedi (1983). It follows Din Djarin, a lone bounty hunter portrayed by Pedro Pascal, as he protects Grogu, a Force-sensitive child, from the remaining Imperial forces. The series’ first three seasons premiered on Disney+ between 2019 and 2023, before the story continued on the big screen with The Mandalorian and Grogu, which arrived in theaters in May 2026.
The Art of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu Book
Now, Star Wars fans can get a brand new behind-the-scenes peek at Din Djarin and Grogu’s journey from streaming to the big screen. According to Variety, a new book, The Art of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, is arriving on November 3, a 256-page hardcover from Abrams Books that takes fans behind the scenes of Lucasfilm’s latest theatrical adventure.
Written by longtime Lucasfilm collaborator Phil Szostak, the book features previously unseen concept art, early sketches, and cast interviews. It explores how the film developed visually, including the creative designs behind its characters, locations, and vehicles.
The Visual Style Behind The Mandalorian
Since the series debuted in 2019, its production design has combined the Western-inspired aesthetic of the original trilogy with new environments created using Industrial Light & Magic’s StageCraft technology. The technology uses LED screens to produce digital backgrounds and environments.
The book also includes a foreword by Doug Chiang, Lucasfilm’s senior vice president and executive design director. His contribution offers insight from a franchise veteran who helped shape the show’s distinctive visual identity.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Cast and Story
Jon Favreau, the creator of The Mandalorian, returned to direct the film. The story follows Din Djarin and Grogu as they undertake a new mission for the emerging New Republic while Imperial warlords remain a threat.
Pedro Pascal reprises his role as Din Djarin. The cast also includes Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt, Jonny Coyne as Janu Coin, Martin Scorsese as Hugo Durant, and Sigourney Weaver as Ward.
Mixed Reviews and Box Office Performance
The Mandalorian and Grogu received mixed reviews from critics and earned a 60% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics described the movie as action-packed but argued that its narrative lacked impact. Some viewed the adventure as a series of episodic skirmishes rather than a compelling overall story, with the chemistry and charm of Din Djarin and Grogu helping sustain the film.
The movie grossed $345.8 million worldwide against a reported budget of $165 million. Its box office performance fell short of Disney’s expectations, making it the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars movie.
A New Way to Explore The Mandalorian
With The Art of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu arriving on November 3, fans can revisit the franchise through concept art, early sketches, cast interviews, and behind-the-scenes details about the film’s creation. The hardcover book offers another way for longtime followers of The Mandalorian and fans of Grogu to explore the galaxy far, far away.
