Will Smith’s Supermax Completes Filming, Sets October 2027 Prime Video Release
Will Smith’s upcoming action thriller Supermax has completed filming, bringing the production one step closer to its planned release in 2027. Directed by David Gordon Green, the film features Smith as an FBI agent investigating a murder inside the world’s most secure maximum-security prison.
Supermax Completes Production
According to an Instagram post shared by Ariana Whittingham, who worked on the production, filming for Supermax wrapped on October 10. Whittingham shared several printed photographs that appear to be from the film’s wrap party, including pictures featuring Smith.
Filming began in August in New South Wales, Australia. The cast also includes AnnaSophia Robb, Jason Clarke, Jaafar Jackson, and Melissa Leo.
Will Smith’s First Feature Film Since Bad Boys: Ride or Die
Supermax marks Smith’s first feature film since 2024’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die. The latest installment in the action franchise earned approximately $400 million worldwide at the box office.
The upcoming thriller also represents a notable step for Smith, as it is a non-franchise studio project. Rather than following an established movie franchise, Supermax will give audiences an original story centered on a murder investigation inside a highly secure prison.
Amazon MGM Studios Acquires Worldwide Rights
Amazon MGM Studios acquired the Miramax project in a deal valued at approximately $70 million, securing worldwide rights to the film. Despite its action-thriller premise and high-profile cast, Supermax is planned as a streaming release rather than a theatrical debut.
The film is scheduled to arrive on Prime Video on October 15, 2027. Its release will provide an opportunity for audiences to watch Smith in a new standalone thriller.
David Gordon Green Takes on a New Thriller
Green directs Supermax from a screenplay written by David Weil and David J. Rosen. The project follows several recent films from Green, including Halloween Kills (2021), Halloween Ends (2022), The Exorcist: Believer (2023), and Nutcrackers (2024).
With filming now complete and its release date scheduled for October 2027, Supermax is moving toward its streaming debut. The film will also test the appeal of an original action-thriller led by Smith outside an established franchise.
What to Expect From Supermax
Although several details about the film remain undisclosed, its central premise places Smith in the role of an FBI agent investigating a murder inside one of the world’s most secure prisons. With Green directing and Amazon MGM Studios backing the project, Supermax is shaping up to be a notable upcoming release for Prime Video.
The film is currently scheduled to debut on October 15, 2027, giving the production team time to prepare for its eventual release.
