DEA Joins Investigation Into Hayden Panettiere’s Death

Federal authorities are joining South Carolina law enforcement in a joint inquiry following the tragic passing of the Heroes and Nashville star.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has formally joined the ongoing investigation into the sudden death of actress Hayden Panettiere, according to reports confirmed by The New York Times and ABC News.

Panettiere was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday, August 16, and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after. She was 36 years old.

A Joint Investigative Effort
While the Greenville City Police Department remains the primary investigative agency on the case, federal agents from the DEA are providing assistance alongside the local coroner’s office.

In an initial police report obtained by authorities, emergency personnel responded to a 911 call reporting an unresponsive female in cardiac arrest. Emergency medical workers administered life-saving measures, but resuscitation efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.

During the initial response, Panettiere’s on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson—who was present at the residence—handed officers a bag containing medications she had allegedly been taking. The specific names of the prescription drugs were redacted in public court documents, and officials have not officially confirmed whether controlled substances contributed to her passing.

Autopsy Completed, Cause Pending
A preliminary autopsy conducted by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office revealed no visible signs of physical trauma. Official cause and manner of death remain officially pending, awaiting the results of comprehensive toxicology and forensic testing, which typically take several weeks.

Panettiere, who rose to childhood fame in films like Remember the Titans before starring as Claire Bennet in NBC’s Heroes and country singer Juliette Barnes in Nashville, had been open in recent years about her personal journey with mental health and addiction, as well as her grief following the 2023 loss of her younger brother, Jansen.

Representatives for the DEA, the Greenville Police Department, and Panettiere’s estate have not issued further public comments as the active investigation continues.
