Avengers: Doomsday Is Set To Bring The MCU’s Biggest Heroes Together In 2026
Avengers: Doomsday is set to fully open in theaters on December 18, 2026, marking the long-awaited return of Marvel Studios’ Avengers franchise to the big screen.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is now only months away from bringing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes together again. The upcoming film will be one of the biggest entries in Phase 6 and will play a major role in the conclusion of the MCU’s ongoing Multiverse Saga.
With Phase 6 approaching its final chapter, the Multiverse Saga is expected to conclude in 2027, potentially changing the MCU’s future in a major way. Robert Downey Jr. will take on a very different role this time, portraying the iconic villain Doctor Doom. His casting also makes Avengers: Doomsday the first Avengers movie since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
More than 30 characters have already been confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, making the upcoming movie one of Marvel’s most ambitious ensemble projects. Alongside the Avengers, the film will bring together the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, with several actors from the former Fox-era Marvel movies returning to reprise their roles.
Channing Tatum, who portrayed Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, will also join the larger mutant ensemble. His appearance adds another major connection between Marvel’s previous X-Men movies and the current MCU.
Although Marvel has announced a large number of characters for Doomsday, there are still several surprises expected. Kevin Feige has previously indicated that many characters have yet to be fully revealed, leaving plenty of room for additional announcements and unexpected appearances.
The film will also reunite directors Anthony and Joe Russo with Marvel. The brothers previously directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame and are returning to direct Avengers: Doomsday.
However, Doomsday will not be the Russo brothers’ only upcoming Marvel project. The directing duo is also set to helm Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled to go into production this year. The 2027 film will serve as the major conclusion to Phase 6 and the Multiverse Saga, with Robert Downey Jr. returning as Victor von Doom.
Another major MCU return involves Chris Evans, whose Steve Rogers is confirmed to appear in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. At San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Marvel also formally announced that Hayley Atwell will return as Peggy Carter for the upcoming December release.
While the next two Avengers movies are not expected to completely reboot the MCU, they are set to lead the franchise toward a major reset. Kevin Feige previously discussed the idea in July 2025, explaining that Marvel was thinking more in terms of a reset and a singular timeline rather than a traditional reboot.
That potential reset could have major implications for the future of the X-Men within the MCU. Feige has emphasized that the X-Men provide an opportunity to tell stories about young people who feel different, excluded, or like they do not belong.
For now, however, the long-term future of the Avengers remains unclear beyond 2027. Phase 7 is currently scheduled to begin with Marvel’s upcoming X-Men movie, which is being developed with director Jake Schreier and is set for release on May 5, 2028.
The X-Men movie will reportedly be followed by Ryan Gosling’s Ghost Rider on July 28, 2028, while Black Panther 3 is scheduled to arrive later that year on December 15.
With Avengers: Doomsday bringing together the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men and other major Marvel characters, the film could become a crucial turning point for the MCU as it moves toward the end of the Multiverse Saga.
