What To Expect From Outlander Season 6
Season 5 of Outlander ends with Jamie (Sam Heughan), Claire (Caitriona Balfe), and their whole clan currently at peace in Fraser’s Ridge, but with what’s coming in season 6, it won’t be for long. Here’s what fans can expect from the period drama when it returns with new episodes.
The Starz historical romance series continues to go through Diana Gabaldon’s novel series that the show is based on. The narrative focuses on the adventures of Claire, a former World War II nurse who was transported back in time through the rocks of Craigh Na Dun. She meets Scottish Highlander, Jamie, and they fall madly in love. The star-crossed lovers have gone through a lot to remain together.
In Outlander season 5, their journey brought them to the United States from Europe just before the Revolutionary War. With their growing clan accompanying them including daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and her own family including Roger Wakefield (Richard Rankin), Jamie and Claire are fighting harder than ever for a future together. Here’s what to expect from Outlander season 6.
Outlander Season 6 Release Date Info
Starz awarded Outlander a two-season renewal, locking in its fifth and sixth outings. This ensures that Jamie and Claire’s adventures will continue at least until season 6. Filming began in January 2021 and was completed in May, and a release date of 2022 has been confirmed for Outlander season 6. A specific date is yet to be announced, but the premiere of Outlander season 6 will offer a treat for fans, with the episode running to a full 90 minutes in length.
Outlander Season 6 Trailer And Story Details
Outlander has mostly stuck with Gabaldon’s novels. Each Outlander season is based on a book, with season 5 mining narrative inspiration from The Fiery Cross alongside some story elements from the sixth book, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, which will be the main source for the upcoming season. Admittedly, Outlander season 5 had some significant deviations from its print counterpart making predicting season 6 a lot trickier, but the show has left fans some clues as to what might be next for the Frasers. A trailer for Outlander season 6 released in October also suggests that the American Revolutionary War will provide the setting and likely much of the tension throughout the next season.
Season 5 featured Claire being abused by Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) and his people simply because of her headstrong personality, not to mention an unusual approach to most things. Jamie ultimately saved her, resulting in the death of Lionel. However, if fans are expecting the Frasers to put this behind them, that’s not going to be the case. For her part, Outlander star Catriona Balfe warned fans during New York Comic Con 2021 that they should expect a “heartbreaking” and “twisted” tale in season 6. A new family named the Christies are headed to the Fraser’s Ridge community where Claire and Jamie live and, while Balfe says the Christies aren’t the typical type of villain, she says their introduction into the couple’s lives will prove “destabilizing.” Based on past seasons, it’s unlikely this conflict will reach a happy conclusion.
