Netflix is expanding its success in the romance TV genre with the upcoming series “Ransom Canyon,” following hits like “Sweet Magnolias,” “Firefly Lane,” and “Virgin River.” Despite a production delay, filming is set to begin in January 2024.

The project, first mentioned by Netflix’s head of drama, Jinny Howe, in August 2022, is described as a multi-generational family show set on a ranch—a blend of “Virgin River” and “Yellowstone.” Netflix acquired the rights to all 11 books in the “Ransom Canyon” series, released between 2015 and 2019.

The adaptation is led by creator, writer, and executive producer April Blair, known for her work on The CW’s “All American.” Amanda Marsalis, known for her work on “Ozark” and “The Umbrella Academy,” will direct the first two episodes.

The series is based on Jodi Thomas’s book series, and the first book, “Ransom Canyon,” centers around rancher Staten Kirkland, his troubled memories, and the convergence of four families against the backdrop of a beautiful but challenging landscape.

The main cast includes Josh Duhamel as Staten Kirkland and Minka Kelly as Quinn. Other notable cast members include James Brolin, Lizzy Greene, Eoin Macken, Jack Schumacher, Marianly Tejada, Garrett Wareing, and more.

Production, initially scheduled for September 2023, was delayed due to industry strikes and is now set to begin on January 30th, 2024, lasting for five months until June 27th, 2024. The series will consist of ten 60-minute episodes.

Producers on the project include Dan Angel through Fezziwig Studios, known for titles like “Goosebumps” and “The X-Files.” Laura Nava, known for her work on “All American” and “Hart of Dixie,” is part of the writing team.

With the series combining romance, family drama, and picturesque settings, “Ransom Canyon” is poised to be another compelling addition to Netflix’s expanding romance TV catalog.
