Daisy Ridley Joins New Horror Movie Get Rid Of It

Amid uncertainty surrounding her future in the Star Wars franchise, Daisy Ridley has secured a new role in an upcoming horror movie.

At Star Wars Celebration 2023, Lucasfilm announced that Ridley would return as Rey Skywalker in a film centered on the New Jedi Order. Set 15 years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the project initially named Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy as its director, with Steven Knight attached to write the screenplay. Knight later exited the project and was replaced by George Nolfi. However, three years after its announcement, the film’s development status and Ridley’s future in the franchise remain uncertain.

According to Deadline, Ridley has joined the cast of the upcoming horror film Get Rid of It, alongside Sosie Bacon and Simon Rex. Ridley will portray Harper, who embarks on a cross-country road trip with her sister Jessie. Their journey takes a disturbing turn when Harper discovers she is pregnant following a one-night stand with a mysterious drifter named Miller. As the sisters struggle to survive, they begin to confront the terrifying possibility that whatever is growing inside Harper may not be human.

Get Rid of It is expected to begin production in early 2027. The film will be directed by Ry Russo-Young, with a screenplay written by Gemma Holdway and David Lancaster serving as producer.

Ridley’s involvement in the horror project, with filming scheduled to begin early next year, suggests that the New Jedi Order movie may not enter production in the immediate future. The actress is also attached to several other projects that have yet to begin filming, including Paramount+’s remake of The Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and the action thriller Dedication.

Rumors have also circulated that the New Jedi Order storyline could be reworked and incorporated into an upcoming Star Wars movie written and produced by Simon Kinberg. The project is reportedly intended to launch a new trilogy, although Ridley’s involvement and the potential return of Rey remain unconfirmed.

Jon Watts has reportedly been selected to direct Kinberg’s film, which is rumored to be Star Wars: Episode X. Lucasfilm has yet to officially announce the movie, leaving open the possibility of Ridley’s involvement once the project moves forward, provided it does not conflict with her other commitments.

Since her last appearance as Rey in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, Ridley has continued to build her career outside the Star Wars universe. Her film credits include Chaos Walking, The Marsh King’s Daughter, Magpie, Young Woman and the Sea, and Cleaner. She has also explored the horror genre with the zombie film We Bury the Dead, which earned an 87% “Certified Fresh” rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an eight-out-of-ten score from ScreenRant critic Grant Hermanns.

Ridley’s Get Rid of It co-stars also bring notable experience to the project. Bacon is known for her roles in 13 Reasons Why, Mare of Easttown, Smile, and Scarpetta, while Rex has appeared in several installments of the Scary Movie franchise and A24’s Red Rocket.

Director Ry Russo-Young has previously helmed episodes of Shrinking, And Just Like That…, Call Her Alex, Sorry for Your Loss, Cloak & Dagger, and Sweetbitter. She also directed the 2019 film The Sun Is Also a Star. Producer David Lancaster’s previous credits include Drive, Nightcrawler, and Whiplash.
