Avengers: Doomsday Brings Back A Familiar Version Of Thor

Avengers: Doomsday directors Joe and Anthony Russo are bringing back a familiar version of Thor for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.

Chris Hemsworth first appeared as Thor in the MCU 15 years ago, and Avengers: Doomsday will mark his 10th appearance as the Asgardian God of Thunder. The film also reunites Hemsworth with Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously directed him in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. According to the filmmakers, Thor’s return to the action in Doomsday will draw from the way the character was portrayed in one of those earlier films.

Thor experienced one of his darkest moments at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War. After Thanos obtained the Space Stone, he killed Thor’s brother Loki and his close ally Heimdall. Thor was then left seemingly dead before being discovered by the Guardians of the Galaxy. He later traveled to Nidavellir alongside Rocket and Groot, where he worked with the dwarf king Eitri to create the powerful Stormbreaker weapon.

The process of forging Stormbreaker nearly cost Thor his life. Although the weapon gave him a chance to strike back at Thanos, Thor’s attack ultimately failed to stop the Mad Titan. Thanos survived the encounter and eventually used all six Infinity Stones to erase half of all living beings across the universe.

Thor’s upcoming confrontation with Doctor Doom could create a very different dynamic, although the full extent of their conflict in Avengers: Doomsday remains unknown. Doom represents a major threat to the multiverse, bringing heroes from several worlds together for the battle. Earth’s-616 Avengers, New Avengers, and Wakandans will join forces with the Fantastic Four from Earth-828 and versions of the original X-Men from the Fox film franchise.

Tom Hiddleston is also returning as the Loki variant who headlined the Disney+ series Loki. However, it has not yet been revealed whether this version of Loki will reunite with Thor during the multiversal events of Doomsday.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Friday, December 18, while Avengers: Secret Wars will continue the story with its planned release on December 17, 2027. Avengers: Infinity War and Hemsworth’s other MCU appearances as Thor are available to stream on Disney+.
