Truth Seekers – a perfect balance of horror, comedy, humanity, and heart

Truth-Seekers

Truth Seekers, a horror-comedy series reunites the comedy duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, who we have earlier seen in Spaced, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End. The series covers a team of part-time paranormal investigators tracks the supernatural using homemade gizmos and further share their adventures online. As a result of their constant stakeouts, they end up uncovering an unimaginable, apocalyptic conspiracy.

Gus Roberts (Nick Frost) is a broadband installation engineer at SMYLE. Apart from fixing the television connection and making house calls, he is passionate about investing in paranormal activities. He lives with his dad, Richard (Malcolm McDowell) with whom he is constantly bantering. He also runs his own Youtube channel, The Truth Seekers.

Gus is not pleased when his boss Dave (Simon Pegg) tells him to pair up with the new employee Elton John (Samson Kayo) but he tries to put up with this situation.

In the meantime, a strange young woman (Emma D’Arcy) seems to be getting visions of the all dead beings around her. These visions include, flames consuming her mother’s kitchen, and several shadowy figures following her in a deserted hospital corridor. She is at first unknown to them but by the end coincidentally collides way with Gus and Elton.

Gus can sense paranormal happenings everywhere, from the peculiar anomalies of radio transmission to the slowly closing of the door. When Elton and Gus go to an elderly woman’s home to fix up her cable connection, they end up in their first paranormal situation together. Strange images from television and thuds coming from above hound them until they grab Gus’s expensive and close to heart gear.

Elton becomes skeptical of their situation and asks Gus to wrap things and head home but Gus makes him an unwilling cameraman to continue their investigation. But the things they discover are more weird than usual and at that time we get a feeling that the show is about to start for real.

The series consists of numerous comedic scenes with cheesiness combined with genuine paranormal events that can keep you on the edge. Pegg is not in front character-wise but it is a fun occasion to see both Frost and Pegg reuniting through the Truth Seekers. Kayo is great as Frost’s partner-in-crime and is equivalent loveable and funny which makes him perfectly contrast Frost’s serious paranormal investigator self.

Truth Seekers is a beautiful blend of crisp storytelling, real scares, genuine and loveable characters, and a big heart. All the horror scenes exist well with a properly constructed plot and event the  little hints dropped at the start comes together really well as something interesting and strong to hole up the series.

Truth Seekers gives off the ‘Ghostbusters’ and a little bit ‘Crazyhead’ vibes but much more British. Truth Seekers is a perfect harmony of horror, comedy, humanity, and heart. It is definitely more than worth your time.
