Netflix Expands KPop Demon Hunters With New Series

KPop Demon Hunters is making a major return to Netflix with a new collection of franchise content.

Originally developed and co-directed by Maggie Kang, the Netflix hit follows the fictional K-pop group HUNTR/X as its members balance their lives as global music stars with their responsibilities as warriors fighting the evil forces of demon ruler Gwi-Ma. Since the film’s streaming debut, Netflix has continued expanding the franchise’s content lineup to maintain audience interest while development on the sequel moves forward, with a potential release window currently set for 2029.

Now, more than a year after the film became a cultural phenomenon, Netflix has announced a dedicated KPop Demon Hunters hub on its platform. The new hub features the original movie and its sing-along edition, alongside several new short-form series. Among the additions is PLAYlist Stories, a six-episode stop-motion series exploring new stories featuring HUNTR/X and the Saja Boys. The series is now available to stream.

Netflix has also introduced KPop Toy Creations, a three-episode series in which a “young filmmaking visionary” creates miniature episodes inspired by the movie. Additionally, the platform has released Play Games With Us, a four-episode stop-motion series featuring competitions and challenges inspired by the film.

The launch of the new hub and its accompanying series follows Netflix’s introduction of weekly choreography videos showcasing both familiar and previously unseen dance moves from the movie’s bestselling soundtrack. The initial announcement also featured an animated HUNTR/X rehearsal of “How It’s Done,” set sometime after the original film’s ending. Rumi’s appearance in bright-colored patterns further suggests the scene takes place following the events of the movie.

The latest additions also continue Netflix’s broader strategy of releasing new KPop Demon Hunters content to keep fans engaged while they wait for the sequel. The streamer recently partnered with the Criterion Collection on an extensive 4K Ultra-HD collector’s edition. Other projects include an animated short film awaiting release, an interactive live experience scheduled to launch in January, a concert tour expected to begin next year, and several comics set to reach shelves.

Although PLAYlist Stories may primarily serve as supplementary content for the original KPop Demon Hunters story, the series could offer a closer look at previously unseen moments between characters. Its success could also provide Netflix with an opportunity to explore additional franchise expansions. Some fans have expressed interest in a spin-off centered on Derpy, Jinu’s wide-eyed pet tiger, which could further explore the mythology of the demon world.

Netflix could potentially follow a similar approach to James Gunn and DC’s Krypto Saves the Day! on HBO Max, which also uses a collection of short episodes to expand its universe. If the new KPop Demon Hunters series proves successful, it could mark the beginning of a similar expansion for the franchise. Even if it does not lead to further spin-offs, the collection offers a unique way for fans to revisit the film and may inspire them to create their own short episodes featuring HUNTR/X and Saja Boys figures.
