Tom Cruise Shares New Update On Top Gun 3 As Maverick Prepares To Return
Tom Cruise has shared a new update on Top Gun 3 following confirmation that his iconic character, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, will return to the danger zone.
The upcoming sequel follows the huge success of Top Gun: Maverick, which was released in 2022 and became a major critical and commercial hit. The film earned nearly $1.5 billion worldwide and received six Oscar nominations, including a nomination for Best Picture. Reports about Top Gun 3 first emerged in January 2024, when the project was reported to be in development.
The sequel was officially announced in April 2026 during Paramount Pictures’ presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, with Tom Cruise confirmed to reprise his role as Maverick.
Cruise will be joined behind the scenes by longtime collaborator Christopher McQuarrie, who is returning to co-write Top Gun 3 alongside Ehren Kruger. Both McQuarrie and Kruger previously worked on Top Gun: Maverick and received Oscar nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay. Eric Warren Singer, Peter Craig, and Justin Marks have also been involved with the project.
Details about the cast remain limited, although reports indicate that Miles Teller could return as Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, while Glen Powell is also expected to reprise his role as Jake “Hangman” Seresin.
Meanwhile, Joseph Kosinski, who directed Top Gun: Maverick, is reportedly not returning for the third installment. The filmmaker has other projects in development, including the Miami Vice movie, which means Top Gun 3 may need a new director.
The film’s production schedule is also still unclear. Cruise is expected to work on Days of Thunder 2 before Top Gun 3, making the former project a more immediate priority for Paramount. With Jonathan Levine attached to direct and Anne Hathaway joining the cast, Days of Thunder 2 currently has a June 2, 2028 release date and is expected to begin filming in 2027.
Although Top Gun 3 is moving forward at a slower pace, the sequel is still in development. Maverick is set to return, bringing more fighter jets, music, and high-speed action to the franchise.
