Shrek Returns For Its 25th Anniversary With An Immersive Shared Reality Experience
Shrek is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a unique new way for fans to revisit the beloved animated movie.
The fantasy-comedy franchise first arrived in 2001, with the original Shrek receiving positive reviews from critics and becoming a major box-office success. The film earned approximately $489.7 million worldwide against an estimated $60 million production budget. Its success led to several sequels, as well as the Puss in Boots spinoff franchise, which also received significant awards recognition. The series is now preparing for another chapter, with Shrek 5 scheduled to arrive next year.
To mark the original film’s 25th anniversary, immersive entertainment company Cosm has announced a new Shrek-themed Shared Reality experience. The attraction is designed to take audiences directly into the world of the 2001 movie, allowing them to explore recognizable locations such as Shrek’s Swamp and Dragon’s Keep while familiar characters accompany them throughout the experience.
The presentation will take place inside Cosm’s massive LED dome, featuring an extremely high-resolution display of 12K or higher. The technology is intended to create a more immersive way for audiences to experience the world of Shrek.
Despite the modern presentation, the original movie will remain central to the experience. According to Cosm’s announcement, Shrek will be shown in its original 16:9 aspect ratio and will remain the main attraction. The Shared Reality elements will work alongside the film, expanding the world around audiences while the movie is playing rather than replacing it.
The project is part of a multi-year agreement between Cosm and Universal Film and is intended to establish a new approach for bringing additional movies into Shared Reality environments. Shrek will serve as the first title under this new model. The partnership also marks Cosm’s second collaboration with a major film studio involving its dome technology, potentially opening the door for similar movie experiences in the future.
Fans will not have to wait long to experience the attraction. Tickets are expected to go on sale this fall, with screenings planned at Cosm venues in Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, and Detroit.
The immersive experience arrives at an interesting time for the franchise, as Shrek 5 is also preparing to continue the main series. Together with the upcoming sequel, the 25th-anniversary experience gives fans another opportunity to return to the world that began with the original Shrek in 2001.
