Netflix-Cancels-In-From-The-Cold-No-Season-2-Renewal

Created by Adam Glass, renowned for his work on titles like Supernatural and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, the first season of In From The Cold blends classic action thriller elements with superpowers.

In From The Cold’s premiere on Netflix occurred globally on January 28th, 2022.

Has In From The Cold Been Renewed for Season 2?

Official Renewal Status: Canceled.

In an interview with Netflix, Adam Glass mentioned that three seasons were initially planned. Referring to the season’s cliffhanger ending, he stated, “Obviously, the end-of-the-season reveal leaves open many questions, and I think you have to play all of that out.”

How Well Did In From The Cold Perform on Netflix?

According to Netflix’s Top 10 data, the show accumulated 85.83 million hours of viewing in its first 16 days on Netflix.

Released on January 28th, it was only eligible for two days in the first week.

The show did not make it into the top 10 between February 14th and February 20th, indicating it garnered less than 11.04M hours viewed. This drop in week 3 was an early indication that viewership fell off fast, suggesting the show wasn’t finding a big audience.

Where did most of the viewership come from?

In the United States, the show was in Netflix’s Overall Top 10 for 12 days and the TV top 10s for a total of 14 days. Generally, it stayed in the top 10s in most regions for about a week to two weeks before dropping out.

Nielsen data reflects this, showing the top 10 between January 24th and January 30th (In From The Cold qualified for two days) ranked number 7 in the “Original” category with 349 million minutes (5.18 million) recorded. This suggests that US viewing comprised 20% of the overall viewing for those first two days.

Glass had emphasized the show needed to do well with viewership to justify returning. We’ve covered before that multiple factors go into renewals at the streamer. In an interview with Looper, Glass emphasized the importance of viewership for a potential season 2 and even season 3:

“It’s up to you to make it happen. Tell all your friends and family to watch it so that we can continue the story. We already have plans for Season 2 and even Season 3. There’s a big story here, and we hope to have the opportunity to keep telling it.”

In April 2023, Glass put out a post on X suggesting that the show failed to get the audience required for renewal and implied the show would not return. He stated:

“We hoped we’d reach a larger audience, but we did not. But that does not detract from the great work of our cast, crew, executives, directors, and writers. Making #InFromTheCold was a dream come true; I’m forever grateful to #Netflix for making it happen.”

What We Expected from In From The Cold Season 2

Many burning questions remain regarding the storyline, especially since the show ended on a significant cliffhanger.

In the final episode of In From The Cold, we see Jenny and Chauncey racing to uncover the culprit behind the chaos of the past seven episodes, leading them to recover a lost child and identify the real target.

As it turns out, the target is Jenny’s mother and former boss, Svetlana Petrova, who orchestrated all the killings and even her daughter’s kidnapping.

Glass hinted at what to expect in season 2:

“Season 2 will take us to New York City and delve into the origin story of ‘the Whisper,’ aka the formidable assassin known as Anya, whom Jenny attempted to leave behind.”
