Netflix Cracks Down On Password Sharing, Announces New Strategy For Password Sharing
Netflix is still swinging on the decision and situation of loss of memberships and password sharing policy. In a recent debate, the streaming giant announced a plan to combat password sharing.
According to a company press release, Netflix will begin a trial program in select regions that identifies accounts being accessed from outside a primary household with the same common password. Users in these areas will receive prompts and notifications to verify their access or create their own accounts by the platform. The company emphasizes this is to ensure “the right viewers are accessing the accounts they pay for.”. This will also lead for the coverage for company’s less membership records in the current times.
However, Netflix also acknowledges the popularity of account sharing within families and friend groups. To address this, they’ll be introducing a new system. Alongside the existing basic, standard, and premium plans, there will be an “add-on member” option. This will allow subscribers to pay a slightly higher fee to grant access to additional viewers outside their household.
While some users appreciate the crackdown on unauthorized access, others worry it punishes legitimate sharing. The new tier system offers some flexibility, but its pricing details and effectiveness remain to be seen as of till now. Analysts predict Netflix will closely monitor the trial program and adjust their strategy based on user feedback. But, the days of freely sharing a single Netflix account with extended networks may be numbered.
