Glen Powell Shares Major Top Gun 3 Update
Glen Powell has revealed a major requirement Tom Cruise has before he will agree to move forward with Top Gun 3.
Although 36 years passed between Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick, work on a third installment began quickly after the sequel became a massive success. Top Gun 3 was confirmed to be in development in January 2024, but updates about the project have been limited since then. That changed when Powell revealed the hurdle the planned movie must overcome before production can begin.
However, the return of director Joseph Kosinski remains uncertain. Following the success of F1 The Movie, Kosinski has a busy schedule that includes the upcoming Miami Vice reboot starring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler. At the same time, Top Gun 3 still does not have a release date.
Making the next Top Gun movie better than its predecessor will be a difficult challenge. Top Gun: Maverick received overwhelmingly positive reviews and earned more than $1.4 billion against an estimated $177 million budget.
Still, Cruise’s career has shown that he should not be underestimated. Top Gun: Maverick surpassed the original 1986 Top Gun in virtually every way, which was especially notable considering there were doubts about whether the sequel could live up to the first movie during pre-production.
Cruise has also spent much of his career in recent years demonstrating that sequels can raise the bar set by their predecessors. Since 2015, he has starred in six sequels, many of which have delivered greater tension and more dangerous stunts than the movies that came before them. Most notably, he has led several Mission: Impossible films that achieved both critical and commercial success.
Given Cruise’s track record, there are plenty of reasons to believe Top Gun 3 could become the biggest film in the franchise yet.
